Royal Roads University is committed to having meaningful relationships with Indigenous people and communities. We are committed to change and recognize we have work to do.
Where we’re starting from
We learn, work and live on the traditional lands of the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and Lekwungen (Songhees) ancestors and families.
We’ve made a commitment to diversity and have implemented a number of diversity initiatives. Part of that work includes taking stock of where we’re starting from so we can chart a way forward.
Our most recent Everyone Counts survey shows 2.6 per cent of our staff members are of Indigenous ancestry. We want to expand that representation further. It's a journey we're embarking on with enthusiasm, authenticity and a genuine desire to connect.
What we are doing next
Our recruitment initiatives complement our academic Indigenization work. Royal Roads has been recognizing Indigenous ways of knowing and integrating these into our academic programs. Staff and faculty do this by validating their importance in research and by engaging with students in their fields of study. Ultimately, it comes down to the relationships we are trying to build with our employees, students and Indigenous communities.
