Dr. Geo Takach - “KNOW THY NEIGHBOUR: Will the Real Alberta Please Stand Up?”

The rising profile of Alberta’s bituminous bonanza and brouhaha (the ‘tar’/’oil’ sands—even the terminology is contested) has made our neighbouring province a poster child for the escalating clash between resource-development imperatives and their unsustainable environmental costs—and rich ground to study place, values and identity in resource-based economies, in a world that seems to communicate increasingly through images. School of Ccommunication and Culture newcomer Geo Takach shares his multi-year, multimodal study of Alberta. Drawing on two books coming this autumn (and an earlier tome), a documentary film for television, three short films, two plays and a migraine, Geo presents a portrait of Wild Rose Country as a fascinating, frustrating, hyperbolic Janus, a bastion of dazzling initiative and innovation on the one hand, and of disturbing, systemic neglect of underprivileged citizens, democracy and the planet on the other. Come and bring your thoughts on BC’s identity to fuel a lively, comparative discussion!
