Abstract: RRU study leaves are awarded based on the merit, feasibility, and benefit of a proposed scholarship and research activity. While study leaves give time needed for the intended activity, they also give space for further exploration of scholarly and research interests. This presentation is about the journey of my study leave, which was given to support my work as a co-editor of a five volume disaster management casebook series. The leave also gave me the opportunity to explore how to incorporate painting into my research and this resulted in me starting work on a painting series as well as a journal article based on my analysis of YouTube video accounts of people’s experiences with the 2016 Ft. McMurray Fire. This presentation will highlight both the intended and unintended outcomes of my study leave, as well as ways to think about painting from a range of disciplinary perspectives.
