Roads to Research with Dr. Terry Mughan
Please join School of Business Associate Professor Dr. Terry Mughan on Wednesday, October 12 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Centre for Dialogue for his presentation: Language in International Business Research and Beyond.
International business as a sub-discipline of business and management is innately affected by the concept of language, be it in the form of the interaction between different national languages or more generically as a medium of communication within and across organizations which operate across national boundaries. Yet, the status of language in the canon of management research is low and has been referred to variously as a forgotten or neglected dimension.
This talk will report on my review of forty years of publishing in the world’s leading journal in international business and will identify key themes and their treatment. It will also draw on research into language as an element of global business strategy undertaken for a book co-authored by the presenter to be published by Palgrave Macmillan later this year.
Some of the topics and findings presented will be of interest to researchers from all disciplines who conduct comparative research across national boundaries and encounter methodological challenges in ensuring quality and reliability of data. Emerging research into English as a business lingua franca which questions the political and hegemonic impacts of this practice will also be discussed. Trite references to 'Lost in Translation' will be avoided.
**Coffee and cookies will be provided.**
