Roads to Research: Geoff Bird
Please join Geoff Bird (School of Tourism and Hospitality Management)for his Roads to Research presentation entitled: At the going down of the sun: Remembrance, heritage and the World War I centenary.
The year 2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I and the commencement of four years of commemoration around the world. Part of the commemoration will involve travelling to battlefields, what some describe as a form of pilgrimage. What exactly should we remember and memorialize about this war in the contemporary era, what are the politics of remembrance involved and what meaning is made by visiting these battlefields? As part of his ongoing research related to war heritage, join Geoffrey Bird as he discusses some of the challenges and potential controversies in commemorating this traumatic global event known as the ‘Great War.’
Coffee provided. Please bring your lunch.
