Do we live like we live on an island? Planning, governance, and the problem of sustainability on Vancouver Island
37 municipal governments, seven regional districts, more than 50 First Nations; those are the administrative structures that govern localities and regions on Vancouver Island. But who is thinking about Vancouver Island in its entirety? Sustainability thinking and practice has a great deal to do with scale, and an important scale consideration that seems to be missed is that represented by the 'blue boundary'; the fact that we are on an island in the ocean. At present, there seems to be no coherent means for thinking about sustainability on Vancouver Island as there is no governance structure for making island-based and island-relevant sustainability decisions.
