Associate faculty member Benoît Gomis discussed the recruitment of North Americans and Europeans to join the jihad fight in Syria and Iraq with host Terry More on C-FAX’s The Drive.
According to Gomis’s research, almost all European Union member states have seen some of their citizens leave their countries of birth to join a jihad against the Assad regime in Syria.
“Very often we tend to think of them as individuals really motivated by ideological and political views,” Gomis says. “But very often, you see youngsters who are very marginalized within the society here in our Western countries and are really looking for some kind of adventure. There’s definitely the sort of fun and social status and prestige elements that also come into play.”
