Black on Butts’ testimony
School of Communication and Culture Assoc. Prof. David Black was interviewed by CFAX 1070 regarding the SNC-Lavalin controversy facing the Trudeau government following testimony to the federal justice committee by the prime minister’s former top aide Gerald Butts.
Here is an excerpt:
‘What I think we have here is the third of the three most important testimonies that we are likely to get. We heard from former [attorney general] Jody Wilson-Raybould, an MP in Vancouver, we heard from Michael Wernick, chief of the privy council who represents the public service to the cabinet, and today I think we got as close as we are going to get…to Prime Minister Trudeau’s own views of the drama that’s unfolding.
‘There were ongoing conversations in cabinet….about important matters of state. The scandal here is more in the aftermath than in those conversations: the story of who influenced whom, if lines were crossed or not, what’s appropriate with respect to the relative power of the prime minster versus the cabinet, and importantly, the attorney general’s own independence.’
