A musical experience with a message

Royal Roads University Associate Prof. Rick Kool appeared in the Goldstream News Gazette March 11 promoting a free screening of Erbarme Dich at the Church of the Advent in Colwood. The documentary film explores the ways Johann Sebastian Bach’s classical masterpiece St Matthew Passion has been used to create joy, and in some instances to incite violence in communities.

Here is an excerpt:

“For some, just coming to hear a beautiful performance of some of the most touching and exquisite sections of this masterwork would be enough reason to attend the showing,” says Kool.

“But the filmmaker has gone beyond just the music, inviting a diverse range of people whose lives have been touched in some way by the work, to speak about the impact great art can have on one’s life.”
