School of Business associate faculty member Hugh Stephens argues that the Canada-China FIPA will be good for Canadian businesses seeking to export more to China in an opinion piece published by the Vancouver Sun. According to Stephens, concerns that the agreement will undermine Canadian sovereignty by challenging Canadian laws in the areas of environmental protection, health and security are overblown and inaccurate.

"While the important final step in bringing the agreement into force came as more of a whimper than a bang, with the government using the classic technique of releasing the announcement on a Friday afternoon to minimize rather than enhance coverage, the agreement will now come into effect Oct. 1. Regardless of what precipitated Canada’s ratification, it is high time this deal was finally completed."
