BCcampus awards DeVries for championing open education
Dr. Irwin DeVries, associate faculty member in the Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration and Leadership (MAHEAL) program, was selected as the first recipient of the Award for Excellence in Open Education.
BCcampus recognized DeVries for his “outstanding leadership and contributions to accessible and open education.” He has long championed making high-quality education and textbooks accessible and affordable for everyone.
The recently retired associate vice president for open learning at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), has no interest in watching TV or playing golf, he writes on his blog.
He joined Royal Roads last fall to teach the Leveraging Technology in Higher Education Environments course in the MAHEAL program.
DeVries has 25 years’ experience in higher education and open and distance learning and is the former director of curriculum development at TRU. He has also worked at the Open Learning Institute of BC, UBC and the Justice Institute of BC.
MAHEAL Associate Professor and Program Head, Dr. Tamara Leary, is thrilled to welcome DeVries.
“The program and the students stand to benefit from his wealth of expertise and experience in both the higher education and technology sectors,” she says.
