Leaders in business, community and the arts to be honoured at fall convocation
Victoria – Royal Roads University graduates will share the stage with a distinguished business economist, Canada’s first female music director of a major symphony and a community-minded entrepreneur during the fall convocation ceremonies on Nov. 4, 2014.
Business Council of British Columbia Executive Vice-president and Chief Policy Officer Jock Finlayson will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for his distinguished service as an economist and being a leading voice on economic and public policy issues affecting the province.
“For two decades, British Columbians have been looking to Jock Finlayson for leadership on economic and public policy issues,” says Royal Roads President and Vice-chancellor Allan Cahoon. “We appreciate his careful economic analysis and have learned to trust his conclusions.”
Victoria Symphony Music Director Tania Miller will also receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of her exemplary work as a leader and for her extraordinary artistic achievements in the community.
“Maestra Miller is an inspiring individual who strives and succeeds in bringing music into our lives,” Cahoon says. “The Victoria Symphony has flourished over the past decade under her guidance. She has increased the accessibility of the symphony experience to diverse members of the community through dynamic programs for children and adults.”
The Chancellor’s Community Recognition Award will be presented to Gordon Denford, a developer and entrepreneur committed to serving his community. He is the founder and owner of Berwick Retirement Communities and has improved the quality of life of thousands of seniors in Victoria, Nanaimo, Comox and Kamloops.
“It is important seniors feel connected to, not isolated from, their community, and Gordon’s efforts are making this possible,” Cahoon says.
This fall’s convocation ceremonies recognize the achievements of more than 760 students who have earned degrees, certificates or diplomas in the Faculty of Management or in the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences.
