New members appointed to Board of...
A Victoria lawyer and a retired business executive from Parksville have been appointed to the Royal Roads University Board of Governors.
Kathleen Birney, a civil trial lawyer with the Victoria firm of Cox, Taylor, advises clients on land use including environmental and regulatory issues. Called to the bar in 1994, Birney has developed broad legal experience including federal prosecutions, representation at the Human Rights Tribunal, and insurance, personal injury and family law.
Birney volunteers with the Vancouver Island Spine Trail Association and the Prairie Inn Harriers. Birney has a Bachelor of Arts in criminology from Simon Fraser University and an LL.B. from the University of British Columbia.
Vernard (Vern) Slaney spent 31 years with Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc., retiring after eight years as company president. Trained in business administration and education at Ryerson and the University of Saskatchewan, Slaney has served on the boards of the British Columbia Automobile Association (where he is currently board chair), the B. C. Press Council (former board chair) and the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health). While at VIHA, he also served for a short time as a director of Health Employers Association of B. C.
The two new board members were appointed by the provincial government, Slaney for a two-year term and Birney for a one-year term, both effective Dec.31, 2013.
“These two new members bring valuable legal and business skills to the board that will strengthen our team as we plan for the future,” said Wayne Strandlund, chancellor and chair of RRU’s board of governors.
“We welcome the experience and backgrounds of our newest board members,” said Allan Cahoon, vice-chancellor and president of RRU. “They will be particularly helpful in connecting with our local community and helping us craft a renewed strategic direction that will provide a solid foundation for growth at Royal Roads.”
