Royal Roads University to permit cannabis use in designated areas

Royal Roads University has updated its Campus Smoking Policy to allow restricted use of cannabis on campus.

Smoking is currently permitted in designated areas at Royal Roads. With the passing of the Cannabis Act on Oct. 17, 2018, cannabis use will be permitted in designated areas separate from tobacco use areas.

“The university allows smoking in designated areas on campus to contain smoking and its second-hand and environmental effects,” says Cheryl Eason, vice-president finance and chief financial officer. “Fire prevention is central to the university’s smoking policy and to our stewardship of Hatley Park’s rich natural environment.”

The university is not expecting significant change to the culture of campus life after Oct. 17, says Roberta Mason, associate vice-president student and academic services.

“Students are here to learn and study, and we appreciate the positive energy they bring to the learning environment every day. We anticipate nothing will change in that regard,” she says.
