Bike to Work Week – Overcoming your barriers
Signing up is as easy as sending an email to email@example.com with ‘sign me up!’ in the subject line.
Do you need help problem solving how you can participate? Check out these responses to possible barriers:
“I don’t want to arrive at work all sweaty”
Carry your work clothes and shower here. There are showers you can use
- on the ground floor of the LIC
- at the Rec centre
- on the second floor of Nixon (go in the back door, by the School of Tourism)
- on the third floor of Millward
“My bike is broken”
There is time to fix it; BTWW is still more than two weeks away. Bring your bike to your local bike shop or drop it off closer to campus on your way into work. Coastal Cycles, Goldstream Cycles and Oak Bay Cycles Westshore have all provided us with BTWW prizes in the past so show them your custom.
“I don’t have a bike”
You can rent one. Royal Roads Rec Centre has a couple of bikes for rent. Contact them for details. If those bikes are already booked for the week, you can rent from Coastal Cycles (down by the Six Mile Pub). Mention you’re a Royal Roads staff member.
“Biking on the road is scary!”
Want to know the best route to get here from home? There is a community of experienced Royal Roads cyclists ready and willing to give you advice on your safest path. Or maybe you can find a cycling buddy. Email RRU-Bike-to-Work-Participants@RoyalRoads.ca to ask for advice.
“I live too far away”
Then don’t ride the whole distance. Participate in whatever way works for you, whether it’s driving partway to campus and cycling the rest, putting your bike on the bus for part of your commute, or treating the whole ride like a power sprint.
“I’m not in good enough shape”
Oh, please! Participate in whatever way works for you, whether it’s driving partway to campus and cycling the rest, putting your bike on the bus for part of your commute, or treating the whole ride like a power sprint.
“I love riding down to campus, but I am not riding up that hill!”
Then walk it. Or ride out through Belmont Park
“I have to drop off / pick up my kids”
Did you know it’s ‘Bike to School Week’ that week as well? Make cycle commuting something your family does together. And if you have to combine your commute with driving or taking the bus, so be it.
