Campus fire drills Oct. 1, 2, and 3

Within the framework of the university’s occupational health and safety program, an exercise to practice fire drills in facilities across the campus is normally carried out on an annual basis.

As such, the university will be conducting fire drills in each of its buildings next week, on Oct. 1, 2, and 3. These dates have been selected in consultation with business units throughout the organization, to ensure that the exercise is meaningful while at the same time, causes minimal disruption to academic programs and other activities on campus.  In addition, the university has been in touch with both the Colwood fire department and the Commissionaires to inform them of these practice drills.

Next week’s schedule is below.  During each drill, volunteer fire wardens will assist with the complete evacuation of all building occupants.  The university has updated its list of wardens, ensuring that a full complement of volunteers has been recruited and trained.  A list of all the wardens, by building, is attached for your information to help you know who to look for during an exercise or in the event of an emergency.

It is anticipated that the duration of each drill should not exceed 15 minutes.  Your assistance and participation are critical components of the exercise, and will help to identify problem issues and assess the readiness of the fire alarm and emergency exiting provisions in our buildings.
