Christie speaks in the Philippines

Humanitarian Studies Professor and Program Head Dr. Ken Christie completed a six-day speaking tour in the Philippines. The event was hosted by Silliman University, one of the Philippines’ leading institutions in human development and an RRU partner.

From January 23-28, 2020, Christie visited Silliman University, Jose Rizal Memorial State University and the University of the Philippines to facilitate workshops and lectures on peace and human security with a focus on Southeast Asia. The event was supported by RRU’s Office of International Collaboration and Development (OICD).

At the University of the Philippines, Christie spoke about radicalization in Southeast Asia. Sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines, the event was attended by more than 100 people, including Canadian and other diplomats, senior military officials and the national media. See the Crossroads article Christie on curbing violent extremism.

Christie’s tour was an outcome of RRU and Silliman University’s cooperation agreement, which began in 2015. OICD connected Christie with Dr. Jenny Lind Elmaco, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Silliman. They have been working together to develop opportunities between RRU’s MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding program and Silliman’s MA in Peace Studies program. This partnership led to Elmaco joining RRU as an associate faculty member in Humanitarian Studies. She is a multidisciplinary leader with expertise in international humanitarian and development, governance and sustainability, negotiation, and security and conflict transformation.
