Dene making a traditional canoe on Great Bear Lake

Associate faculty member Mary-Anne Neal has just returned from another trip to the far north and is hard at work on volume two on the Dene Heroes series of books. With funding from the Northwest Territories Community Literacy Development Council, she will again compile and edit stories about heroism among the Dene in the Sahtu region of the Northwest Territories.

This collaborative, community-driven project arose as a way to give the Dene a voice and encourage them to make the transition from an oral tradition to the written word. By writing about someone they admire who is of Dene descent, indigenous authors increase pride in their communities and themselves.

People of all ages from the Dene communities of Colville Lake, Fort Good Hope, Deline, Norman Wells and Tulita will submit their stories to Neal when she returns to the Sahtu in October. She will compile and edit the stories, design and publish the book for distribution at community celebrations in January, 2018.
