Disaster volunteerism in a digital age

Associate Professor Jean Slick, in the Disaster and Emergency Management program, was a keynote speaker at the recent Alberta Emergency Management Agency 7th Annual Stakeholder Summit in Calgary, Alberta.

Every disaster situation is characterized by the convergence of volunteers who seek to help with the response effort. Some volunteers are affiliated with existing organizations, while others are not and self organize. Jean's keynote presentation to the 390 delgagates attending the 2015 Alberta Emergency Management Agency Stakeholder Summit explored broader patterns in the characteristics of volunteerism after a disaster, and examined the ways in which social media is changing the dynamic of disaster volunteerism. The implications of these patterns and changes for emergency management practice were discussed.
