Nicole Johnson and Olga Belikov were recently awarded a Young Scholar Grant from the Ulrich Bernath Foundation for Research in Open and Distance Learning. The researchers are doctoral students working with Canada Research Chair and School of Education and Technology  Professor George Veletsianos. The award supported Nicole traveling to the European Distance and E-learning Network Research Workshop in Barcelona, Spain to present a research study on behalf of the team.

The purpose of the presentation was to share the results of a recent research study examining whether, how and why scholars' social media use changes over time. The study was supported by an SSHRC Insight Grant held by Veletsianos. The presentation focused on the implications for higher education institutions when recommending or mandating social media practices for scholars. In particular, the presentation identified factors that influence scholars' social media use over time and argued that institutions must understand these to ensure that any policies or directives do not potentially create problems and tensions.
