The catalpa located on the east side of Hatley Castle has been unwell for some time. As it has continued to deteriorate, it now presents a safety risk. The tree is scheduled for removal on Monday, Sept. 16. This date was chosen with nesting season for birds in mind.
Taiwania cryptomerioides, an evergreen conifer in the cypress family native to Taiwan, will be planted to replace the catalpa, in a slightly different location to avoid utilitity access points located in the area.
