How Children are Made into Consumers

The topic of how young children experience consumer culture and what parents can do about it was the subject of an invited talk, "Brand New Kids: How Children Become Consumers," that featured School of Communication and Culture faculty member David Black, and was hosted by the parents of Lambrick Park Preschool and Daycare in Gordon Head. Held the evening of Monday May 4 at the Gordon Head United Church, the talk addressed such topics as advertising and children's cognitive development, how ads interfere with relationships between children and parents, and other topics relating to raising a family in a material world.
