Hych'ka Siem: National Aboriginal Day Success

In the spirit of the ancestors of the lands, Hych'ka Siem for all the hard work that went into making RRU National Aboriginal Day celebrations a success!

On June 20, 2014, Sneq'wa e'lun (the Blue Heron House) was buzzing with many guests who attended the celebrations, that included viewing SD 62 Indigenous Youth Art Show, tasting some delicious fry bread, sipping on some tea and coffee, sitting in the RRU Elders Circle sharing circle, partiicpating in the Medicine Plant walk with Kenneth Elliott, and sitting in the Gathering Room to listen to storytelling, along with drumming and singing by the UVic Standing Nation Drum group.

Overall, the day was amazing. I want to raise my hands to RBC employees who had a table and a lending hand in serving food and beverages and to the Student Against Violence team who donated great carved pendants to our guests. Hych'ka Siem to the members of RRU Elders Circle who attended, your presence and spirit feeds the room and allows many to become grounded. Hych'ka Siem to Power to Be, who have been a long time supporter, and when we call upon each other, we know we can count on you to arrive willing and able to assit when and where needed. One day, we will get the canoe in the water and filled with participants! Hycha'ka Siem to all our participants this year, we hope to see you all back next year!

If you didn't have the opportunity to make it down to participate this year, no fret, we will be hosting again next year, June 19, 2015! Also keep your eyes and ears open to how you can join and assist RRU Indigenous Education and Student Services to help fundraise for the Standing Nation Drum groups throughout the year that will support their Powwow next year.
