Jaigris Hodson, associate professor in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies, is the successful recipient of a MITACS Canadian Science Policy Fellowship. This fellowship places Hodson with the Canadian Government Environment and Climate Change Branch, where she will investigate how Canadian scientists can best communicate science and climate change information to the Canadian public. She will use her research in social media information sharing, online research curation and social media user behaviour to develop a one-year project. That project will engage Hodson in identifying recommended ways to reach the Canadian public with information as well as in identifying recommended ways to train scientists and researchers to ensure their work reaches the public. During the one-year fellowship starting in September 2018, Hodson will be placed in Ottawa. “I hope to use this opportunity to combine the fields of communication and environmental education in a way that will benefit all Canadians,” Hodson said.
