Ken, Shelley and the CDA Institute
Dr. Ken Christie and Shelley Langille spent February 16 and 17 attending the annual Conference of Defence Associations Institute Conference on Security and Defence and associated activities in Ottawa. Royal Roads University was pleased to be an exhibitor sponsor and Dr. Christie was invited to present and participate on a panel moderated by Dr. Jim Boutilier on the topic of great powers and interventionism. Dr. Christie's topic was humanitarian interventions and Afghanistan and he was joined on the panel by Dr. Roland Paris, University of Ottawa, and Kerry Lynn Nankivell, Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies.
The conference saw high-level attendees from around the world and included speakers such as General Jonathan Vance, Chief of the Defence Staff, Canada (as an RRMC ex-cadet he was thrilled and moved when Shelley presented him with our 75th Anniversary Commemoration Coin!), The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Official Leader of the Opposition, General Lori Robinson, Commander NORAD & U.S. Northern Command, Le général de division aérienne Philippe Montocchio, France, and The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, among others.
Networking opportunities were plentiful and Dr. Christie and Shelley had extended conversations with potential students, RRMC and RRU alumni, The Honourable Mobina S.D. Jaffer, Q.C., Senator for B.C., and new contacts from the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research, the Invictus Games, the Merchant Navy and others.
