Living Our Model series launches with success

The Centre for Teaching and Educational Technologies (CTET) is pleased to announce the successful launch, on April 4, of the Living Our Model series. This series highlights various elements of the RRU Learning and Teaching Model, showcasing how faculty are making them “come alive” in Royal Roads courses. Our goal is to share leading practices and common challenges, strengthen our collective knowledge base and increase collaboration across campus.

The first event, exploring an aspect of the Outcomes-Based Element of the model, was co-facilitated by Dr. Eva Malisius (School of Humanitarian Studies), Dr. Lesley Lahaye (School of Education and Technology) and Dr. Sophia Palahicky (CTET). They facilitated a lively and interactive session for faculty about using rubrics to assess student assignments. (If you missed the session, the recording is available on the RRU Livestream channel here.

Coming up next in May, we’ll be exploring the Technology-Enhanced element of the RRU Learning and Teaching Model. Taking a different format, this session will be held asynchronously over the five days between May 15 and 19, revealing one or two examples every day of how faculty are using online tools to enhance activities and assignments in their courses.

RRU Faculty and staff can self-enroll in this session now by visiting the Living Our Model: Technology-Enhanced Session course site and using the enrollment key “learntech2017”. We’ll begin daily reveals on Monday, May 15. We suggest setting aside 15 minutes each day to get an overview of the tools featured on that day and another 30 minutes to actually try one out and get hands-on practice. If you really love it, you’ll have a chance to discuss with others (or jot your own notes for yourself) about how you think you could use it in your own teaching.

Future sessions for Living Our Model will explore experiential & authentic, team-based learning, learning communities and engaged learning elements of the Learning and Teaching Model. We hope you’ll join us all year to showcase, learn and share.

More information and resources related to the Living Our Model series can be found on the RRU OER site or by contacting Beth Cougler Blom.
