In Memory of Velma Haslin



Velma was an amazing contributor to the School of Leadership as an Associate FacultyShe passed away on July 17, 2014. 

Velma held senior administrative positions as a school principal, supervisor of instruction, acting deputy superintendent, and Assistant Director, Programs Branch, Ministry of Education. As a lifelong learner, she completed a number of post-graduate courses at American universities.

Velma designed and taught many online courses for MA in Leadership programs. She also taught credit courses for the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University and Royal Roads and spoke at provincial, national and international conferences.

Her firm, Velma Haslin Educational Consultants Ltd., conducted a number of significant provincial projects such as the 17 Regional Business, Labor, Education Forums; analysis of the Instructional Resource Packages (K – 12); evaluation of the Applied Academics Programs; and analysis of the Provincial Post-Secondary Apprenticeship Forums.

Velma received special recognition from the Minister of Education for her work in career programs throughout the province, an Honorary Life Membership in the Career Education Society of BC, and a lifetime award from the Provincial Specialists Association Council, BCTF. She was a very accomplished and strong woman who stood out in terms of her ability to create change and advocate for the welfare of children. 

Velma enjoyed music, traveling, learning and spending time with her three children and four grandchildren.

Velma was a mentor to many, and a privilege to work with.
