Message from President Steenkamp
Hay'sxw'qa si'em! As the new president and vice-chancellor of Royal Roads University, I feel incredibly excited to join a community that is so passionate about equipping people with the skills to thrive in an ever-changing world.
I'd like to thank the Presidential Search Committee for recommending me for this position and the Board of Governors for appointing me president. This vote of confidence is a great honour and I will do everything I can to earn your trust and support as we work together to chart a new course for this great university.
I've got a lot to learn and I will be spending the next few months meeting with as many of you as I can to hear about the work you are doing in classrooms, labs and workplaces and in the buildings and grounds of our beautiful campus. I'd also like to hear about your ideas for innovation and change and test out a few ideas of my own, as well as seek your advice about how to handle some of the challenges and opportunities ahead of us.
I am deeply committed to collaboration and to working in partnership with you, and I invite you to reach out to me in the same spirit, at any time and on any issue. I will be particularly focused on ensuring that we live up to our commitments to sustainability, equity and inclusion, and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and communities, most importantly, the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and Lkwungen (Songhees) nations, whose ancestors and families have lived here for thousands of years.
A university is not a collection of buildings and programs, but rather a diverse community of teachers, scholars, researchers, practitioners and staff, all working in service of our students and the broader society. I am grateful to join a community with such an enviable track record in innovative teaching and learning, applied and relevant research and authentic engagement with communities, at home and abroad.
I am fortunate to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Allan Cahoon and I'd like to thank him for his outstanding leadership over the past 11 years. I look forward to building on the strong foundation he put in place as we continue to pursue our life-changing mission.
I look forward to meeting you in the weeks ahead.
