Moodle Update: Tuesday, May 15
Moodle will be updated on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Moodle will be unavailable from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 to allow IT Services to perform the update. An orange notification banner will be visible in Moodle leading up to the update to inform all users of the scheduled outage.
Updating Moodle is an important part of how we ensure the security of our learning management system, and also allows us to stay current with the global Moodle community and new features. Unlike last year’s upgrade to Moodle 3.2, the coming update will be subtle, similar in many ways to when your phone or computer performs regular updates to ensure ongoing security and optimal functionality. Users may notice a few small visual changes. For example:
- Students will now be able to navigate more easily between activities and resources in their courses. Users will see navigation buttons pointing them to the next activity or resource, and will also have the option of jumping to any other activity or resource in the course via a drop-down menu. Note: As a result of this navigation update, all activities and resources in Moodle will need a unique name. For example, “Unit 1: Instructor notes”, “Unit 2: Instructor Notes”, etc. CTET staff will make these changes during course production.
In addition, some new features will be available in Moodle after the update, for example:
- Stealth mode will allow instructors to hide activities and resources from students, but still allow students to access the activity or resource using a direct link. We anticipate this feature will be particularly useful when used in tandem with Moodle Lesson activity, which can be set up so that students must complete a particular task before the next activity is available. In this case, students would only get the link to the next activity (in stealth mode) after completing the Moodle Lesson.
If you are interested in learning more about using stealth mode, please connect with a CTET instructional designer.
