National Indigenous Peoples Day 2019

Hello RRU Family,

You are invited to the National Indigenous Peoples Day 2019 celebrations June 21 at Royal Roads, which is on the traditional lands of the Teechamitsa Family and the Lkwungen (Songhees) and Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) ancestors and families.

The day-long event will include:

  • canoe landing protocol and canoe challenge
  • drumming, singing and dancing
  • children’s field games
  • Indigenous foods
  • craft workshops
  • artists and vendors
  • a walk along Colwood Creek with Cowichan Nation Elder Kenneth Elliot to learn about the history of the land and Indigenous plants
  • on-campus transportation between event locations for Elders and guests who need assistance

Last year we welcomed more than 2,000 people to this wonderful celebration on the shores of Esquimalt Lagoon.

If you are looking for an opportunity to make connections to Indigenous community and culture, and give back, you can sign up to volunteer or participate in the Canoe Challenge.

All my relations,
