The Diversity Action Group (DAG) encourages all schools and units to offer some flexibility to their staff on Friday, June 21, to explore and take part in the National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations taking place on campus from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Of course, it may not be possible for schools and units to close their doors to allow everyone to take in the whole day, but DAG encourages supervisors to try to free members from their teams for at least a few hours to allow everyone to be part of this very important day.

Reconciliation begins with a curiosity on the part of non-Indigenous Canadians, and a genuine desire to explore Indigenous knowledge, ways of being and learning, practices and world views. Friday’s campus celebrations offer a unique opportunity to begin this journey. It is a day of celebration and pride for Indigenous communities and also a day of discovery and learning for all.

It might be particularly important for schools, units and services to avoid scheduling key events on Friday, such as interviews, hiring and departmental meetings that might detract from the importance of these celebrations. We hope to see you on Friday!
