New associate director for ECDC


The Faculty of Management is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Mittelman has taken on the role of associate director for the Eric C. Douglass Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (ECDC). Dr. Mittelman will continue in his role as associate professor of social entrepreneurship and lead for the new Royal Roads Graduate Certificate in Corporate Social Innovation.

Dr. Mittelman’s research focuses on social innovation, entrepreneurship and charitable giving. His recent work explores donor behaviour in response to international humanitarian aid appeals.

Prior to joining Royal Roads, Dr. Mittelman worked as an entrepreneur, starting and running a number of small businesses and social enterprises in Canada and overseas. He ran his own national confectionary distribution business, worked with micro-entrepreneurs in Peru with, and served as a consultant for MBAs Without Borders in Guatemala. He has also taught a wide range of entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, international business and marketing courses at the undergraduate, graduate and executive education levels to students in Canada, the United States, Colombia and Iran.

Dr. Mittelman completed a PhD in Management from the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University, a Master of Business Administration from the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, a Bachelor of International Business from Carleton University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Western University.

The ECDC was established in 2007 with a $1.6 million endowment from a successful Edmonton entrepreneur who left the family farm at 13 and went on to achieve success in Alberta’s transport, construction and development sectors.

Dr. Mittelman’s appointment will further enhance the ECDC mission, which is to engage entrepreneurs and communities to facilitate the design and implementation of business models for new ventures that will enable a new breed of entrepreneurs to “make a positive difference in our communities while making a profit."
