New director for STHM


The Faculty of Management (FoM) is pleased to announce that Dr. Geoffrey Bird has accepted the appointment as director of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) for a three year term commencing October 1, 2016. Geoff is an associate professor in the school and has most recently served as the program head for the Master of Arts in Tourism Management. His research interests include heritage tourism, remembrance tourism, community development, poverty alleviation, sustainable tourism, cultural landscapes, tourism HRD policy and practice and the visitor experience.  

Geoff’s scholarly activities have recently included, among others, being producer and director of the documentary: War Memories across Canada through the Canadian Heritage Commemoration Fund and with support from Parks Canada and Valour Canada. He is the lead editor, with Reeves, K., Claxton, S. (2016) of the Routledge publication Managing and Interpreting D-Day’s Sites of Memory: Guardians of Remembrance and the co-editor, with Reeves, K., James, L., Stichelbaut, B. & Bourgeois, J. (2016) of Battlefield events: Landscape, Commemoration and Heritage, also published by Routledge. Geoff has worked on three Canadian International Development Agency-funded tourism training projects in Vietnam and Malaysia. While living in Kuala Lumpur, he was president of the Malaysia Canada Business Council.  

Geoff holds a PhD from the University of Brighton where he studied the relationship between battlefield tourism and remembrance. He also holds an MSc in training from the University of Leicester, UK, where he studied tourism education policy and planning. His BA Honours degree in International Development is from the University of Guelph with a minor in French Literature. We congratulate Geoff and wish him well in his new role.
