Outstanding teaching - Brian Belcher
The Kelly Outstanding Teaching Awards recognize core and associate faculty members who are deemed to be representative of outstanding teachers at Royal Roads University. Leading up to the 2017 awards announcement in September, we will highlight nominees (in alphabetical order) via a special profile on their teaching philosophy.
“My strong interest in and commitment to problem-oriented research and research effectiveness guides my teaching philosophy. I normally teach in the first residency of the DSocSci program, with students each embarking on their own research project. My role is to help students conceptualize and begin to refine their research ideas and to think about their research from a theoretical perspective. We discuss the meaning of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, and how they can apply social scientific theory to the particular issue that they are passionate about. I encourage students to be critical and to explore and draw upon a wide range of other scholarship to inform their own thinking and research design.”
