The Kelly Outstanding Teaching Awards recognize core and associate faculty members who are representative of outstanding teaching at Royal Roads. Leading up to the 2017 awards announcement in September, we will highlight nominees (in alphabetical order) via a special profile on their teaching philosophy.

Catherine Etmanski

“Inspired by moments when I recognize the fundamental beauty of humanity—moments of kindness, cooperation, forgiveness, humor, or reckless abandon—I strive to replicate elements of this beauty in my work. I enjoy organizing spaces for growth and, in some cases, radical transformation—spaces that balance deep critical reflection with the joy of learning, that are inclusive and accessible, and that inspire hope for a more sustainable and compassionate world.

The moment when my curricular design meets a new group of students is the moment where my best intentions, as articulated above, become grounded in real-life experience. John Dewey is famously quoted as saying, "We do not learn from experience; we learn from reflecting on experience, and I have found reflection to be the key to improving my teaching practice."
