Outstanding teaching: Geoff Archer
Each year, the Kelly Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes a core or associate faculty member who is representative of outstanding teaching at Royal Roads. Leading up to the 2014 award announcement this fall, we will highlight each of the nominees in a special profile on their teaching philosophy.

“I believe that the most learning success comes through failure. The Online Venture Challenge assignment, for example, gives students one month to operate an online store that benefits a charity. If you wake up every day knowing that your metrics are terrible (e.g. no or low revenue, profit, traffic, etc.) then you are likely going to have several more conversations with your teammates about the levers of change than a team for which everything came easily. So, specifically, (learning) success to me looks like an experiential exercise that flounders around for a while before rising from the ashes as a result of changes made in a sensemaking effort.”
The Kelly Outstanding Teaching Award is open to all Royal Roads University faculty members who are actively engaged in teaching for-credit courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A call for nominations is sent out each spring to faculty, staff, and students. Learn more about the awards here and see past recipients here.
