The Kelly Outstanding Teaching Awards recognize core and associate faculty members who are representative of outstanding teaching at Royal Roads. Leading up to the 2017 awards announcement in September, we will highlight nominees via a special profile on their teaching philosophy. The nominees highlighted in this article are the nominees for the New Teacher Award: Emily Bozanich and Marnie Jull.

Emily Bozanich

“In teaching, my biggest goal is to help the students learn how to use their own abilities to grow and help each other excel. My focus is drawing on this existing wealth of knowledge to create a team environment where new topics and material can be understood and implemented through critical thinking rather than the classic model of learning by rote. I feel very strongly that we learn best when we can understand the real-world implications of the material we are studying. How better to do that than to develop a group mentality where previous experience is melded with new ideas to give us all a well-rounded understanding of the explicit reasoning behind the topics we cover.”

Marnie Jull

“I model the skills and theory I teach so students have an actual, embodied experience of the material they study. I believe that it is this authentic, engaged learning that holds the highest potential for transformative possibilities.  My goal is to encourage students to be expansively open rather than constricted by threat, and this can require a skillful demonstration of listening, curiosity and reflective practice. In this relational, dynamic process of learning, I aspire to co-create a context that can support new behaviours and influence the broader contexts in which students are situated. In this way, my teaching aspires to change lives and systems for more expansive possibilities to emerge.”
