Outstanding teaching: Virginia McKendry
The Kelly Outstanding Teaching Awards recognize core and associate faculty members who are representative of outstanding teaching at Royal Roads. Leading up to the 2016 awards announcement in September, we will highlight nominees (in alphabetical order) via a special profile on their teaching philosophy.
“For me, teaching consists of creatively curating the central ideas and skills of my discipline, and designing activities that promote knowledge acquisition, self-reflection and critical thinking—but it is our students themselves that must determine why they have come to learn and how they learn best. For that reason, my teaching is intentionally relational, focused on providing cognitive and emotional care for my beloved students who are undertaking a deeply transformative process that can be alternately thrilling, alarming, and dull as dishwater”
