RRU Food Bank needs food
RRU Food Bank is a Student Services initiative that serves our most vulnerable students on campus. This is a special call for your help to fill the RRU Food Bank because we're running low!
Where is it?
The Food Bank is physically located in the Recreation Centre and may be accessed anytime during operating hours. Students just ask the staff at the reception counter to borrow the key. They may visit the Food Bank as often as needed and may take as much food as they like, within reason, understanding that there are other students with need. It is not meant to replace a forgotten lunch or fully feed a student for the school year, but aims to help out during a short-term time of need.
How does it operate?
The primary supply of unperishable food is donated by students leaving residency. It is collected via bins located in residency lounges by our custodial staff and delivered to the Recreation Centre. Several times a year, depending on demand and funding available, Financial Aid & Awards staff will stock the shelves with food purchased at Costco and other wholesale shops, in packaging that is hygienically sharable.
How can you help?
Donations of unperishable food are gratefully accepted at the Recreation Centre year-round. Popular items are:
- Canned soup
- Canned fruit
- Canned beans
- Canned vegetables
- Rice (any kind)
- Granola/snack bars
- Peanut butter
- Toiletries (those shampoos and conditioners from hotels are great too!)
- Popcorn, hotchocolate (because everyone needs a little soul food ever so often)
- Basically anything that keeps well on a shelf that can be eaten
We have enough instant oatmeal to feed an army! Seems it's a popular item for students in residency to buy, but nobody actually wants to eat it.
Information is available on the RRU Food Bank website.
