RRU grad to do PhD in Wales

Haval Ahmad, Royal Roads Master of Arts in Human Security and Peacebuilding graduate, has been accepted to Aberystwyth University’s doctorate program in the Department of International Politics on the west coast of Wales. Ahmad plans to research the de-radicalization of children and youth in the post-ISIS Syria and Iraq.

At Royal Roads, Ahmad studied under Prof. Ken Christie, Human Security and Peacebuilding Program program head. His master’s thesis explored a Canadian framework for youth de-radicalization using qualitative data gathered through interviews with school counsellors, religious leaders and academics. His research suggested the need for community-based initiatives to “create a safe and inclusive platform for youth to share their views and maintain a positive Canadian identity.”

He recently published his research findings in the Journal for De-radicalization, and presented his findings at the Pathways to Resilience Conference in South Africa in June.
