Should Canada support Taiwan's TPP Entry?
Associate faculty member Hugh Stephens shares thoughts on whether it is in Canada's interest to support Taiwan's membership in the Trans-Pacific Partnership with the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
He argues that subject to specified conditions, it would be in Canada's interest to support Taiwan's entry into the Transpacific Partnership trade negotiation. These conditions are the need to complete the negotiations with the current 12 members, demonstration by Taiwan that it is politically ready to accept the high standards of the agreement and ensuring that China does not object to Taiwan's participation. Given the recent improvement in relations between Beijing and Taipei, closer relations between Canada and Taiwan do not have to be a zero sum game in terms of Canada's relations with China, Stephens says.
