Sustainability Awareness Week - April 17-21

Have you ever wondered how you could save money on energy and driving costs? Or what to do with your old electronics? Or wanted to learn about the natural and ecological significance of campus? Well now is your chance! The Office of Sustainability is excited to announce Sustainability Awareness Week in April to raise awareness about sustainability and environmental protection, and celebrate the Earth.

During the week of April 17 to 21, to coincide with Earth Day (April 22), a series of events and resources will be provided by the Office of Sustainability to help raise awareness of the environmental challenges we face, and ways we can make positive changes to the environment that not only will reduce negative environmental impacts but could also save you money.

The following events are planned for the week:

April 17 – E-waste awareness

This day will focus on and bring attention to electronic waste or e-waste, and how to properly dispose of such items. Please join us for a lunch-n-learn session at noon in Grant 318 where we will discuss e-waste disposal and the dumping and dangerous recycling of e-waste.

April 18 – Car free day

Day 2 will focus on promoting emissions reduction from single occupant vehicles and encourage individuals to leave their car at home and bike, walk, carpool, kayak or take public transit to campus. A bike workshop will be held outside the Grant Building at noon to provide bike maintenance and safety tips to experienced or new cyclers.

April 19 – Fuel-efficient driving

Fuel-efficient driving can be an effective way for individuals to lower their fuel costs, reduce their environmental footprint and ward off climate change. Join us at noon in Nixon 119 to learn about strategies to help you conserve fuel and save money on vehicle maintenance costs.

April 20 – Energy conservation

This day will promote campus-wide energy conservation through the disconnection of electronic devices that are not in use or not essential to daily work. B.C. Hydro will be on site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Habitat Café to provide energy efficient tips, so if you are interested in reducing your energy consumption and saving energy costs, stop by their table.

April 21 – Earth Day

This day will celebrate Earth Day, which falls on Saturday, April 22. One of the themes for Earth Day 2017 is EarthPlay – getting people outside – playing and connecting with nature. To help celebrate, join us in the Italian Garden at noon for a guided walking tour around campus to enjoy the outdoors and experience the natural and ecological significance of Royal Roads’ campus.

If you have any questions about our activities please contact Roberto Melfi. We look forward to engaging and inspiring positive environmental changes.
