Join Assoc. Prof. Geoffrey Bird as he presents his new documentary vignettes on topics related to the First and Second World Wars. Topics include war memorials, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Canada and Jewish refugees to Canada during the Second World War.

The War Heritage Research Initiative Lecure Series explores various aspects of history, heritage and memory of the world wars. The series will include a showcase the new War Memories across Canada documentary vignettes, written, directed and produced by Bird, the project lead.

In addition, the series will welcome guest speakers throughout the year presenting on recent research.

Whereas war history is an essential cornerstone of this series, heritage and memory refer to the contemporary ways in which we remember and connect with the past.  A range of topics, including how we remember, forget and silence the past, the invention of commemorative traditions, the traditions and relevance of how we remember, and the significance and meaning of war tourism are some of the topics we explore.

This free event takes place Thursday, March 14 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm at Hatley Castle.

A second event also takes place Tuesday, March 19 from 7:00pm to 9:00 pm at the Dave Dunnet Theatre, Oak Bay Secondary School.
