The Centre for Teaching and Educational Technologies (CTET) invites faculty, associate faculty and staff to participate in an intercultural learning workshop, on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Centre for Dialogue. This session will also be livestreamed for participants unable to attend on campus. The workshop will be co-facilitated by instructional designers Donna DesBiens and Eric Bigrigg, with opening remarks by Sophia Palahicky, associate director (CTET).

Workshop Description

Developed in response to emerging campus concerns, this workshop aims to develop intercultural teaching and learning competencies by sharing knowledge, successes, challenges and engaging in lesson-building activities.

Royal Roads, like other universities across Canada is striving to develop campus-wide capacity for intercultural and global understanding to better meet the needs of our diverse Indigenous, international and local multicultural communities. Canada is regarded as a world role model for successful multiculturalism, yet the research indicates we focus more on its surface aspects of "food, festivals, fashion, faces and flag" than open critical dialogue about the deep culture of worldviews and values in our classrooms, especially when these are in tension. While there are important differences between Indigenization, internationalization and mainstream adult education pedagogies, they converge on the value of critical discourse and experiential learning to enable the transformative learning processes that in turn make intercultural learning and equity in education possible. In this workshop, we will define key intercultural learning terms, explore foundational intercultural teaching competencies and share promising practices and research-based resources.
